Smoking and Children

Posted on 01 February 2012

by Mamapumpkin‏

My mother smokes. For as long as I’ve known her, she has smoked. My brothers smoke and I have also smoked. I’m asthmatic. Is there a co-relation? Who knows? But what I do know is that smoking in front of kids is bad. Almost everybody knows that but what many people don’t know is that if second hand smoke (the inhalation of passive smoke) is bad, then what about third hand smoke? What exactly is third hand smoke?

Poo Baby Poo!

Posted on 04 January 2012

by Intan

I have 5 younger siblings, but never once in my life have I ever cleaned their stools. Well, except once when my youngest sister was 3 and I had to clean up her poo as my mother was not at home. Guess what I did? While holding my breath, I took the toilet brush (yes, the one that you use to clean toilet bowls) and as careful as I could I cleaned her using that brush!  Maybe, that’s what being “geli” can do to you and maybe, that’s why my mother never asked me to wash my other siblings’ stools ever again.

Amber Chia’s Best Birthday Gift Ever From Baby Ashton

Posted on 14 December 2011

by Amber Chia

It has been a great year. I shall certainly remember 2011 as a year of achievements! I am very happy with what I have done this year.  My son, Ashton is healthy and happy. I have never been so busy with modeling and acting engagements. I opened four academies in one year. My business is growing and getting better but the most satisfying part is being able to help my students make their dreams come true.  Of course, I wouldn’t have done all these without the generous support of my sponsors, friends and members of the media.

Getting Your Child To SLEEP!!!

Posted on 30 November 2011

by Mamapumpkin‏

Another big, BIG problem for parents the world over is getting their children to sleep independently. It is amazing how much time parents waste just trying to get their kids into bed and you really haven’t a clue how a child rocks your world with such an impact till you have a child who refuses to eat, sleep and listen. Sometimes I do ask myself why anyone has kids. I myself have literally just come out of the kids’ bedroom after wasting 1.5 hours lying down in a darkened room with about 58 intermittent threats that if you don’t lie down right now, I will leave the room!

What to Do When Your Child is Hospitalized

Posted on 16 November 2011

I had ‘beautiful’ experiences when my children were hospitalized. It began when Hafiy’s temperature hit 40 degrees Celcius. He was sent to the Emergency Department and admitted immediately.  Then, Fahry was nursed in a hospital incubator for 30 days, followed by another twelve days in Special Care Nursery.

Toddlers and Drinking WATER in their Terrible Twos!

Posted on 26 October 2011

by Mamapumpkin‏

A perennial challenge for parents the world over, here’s how we have dealt with kids not wanting to drink anything. It’s OK if your kids will still drink juice or other liquids but it becomes a real problem when they won’t drink ANYTHING, and only drink when extreme thirst strikes them. My 2 girls are like that. It’s completely genetic. Their mother hardly gets thirsty and the same goes for their grandmother. We have to literally set our alarm clocks to remind us to drink. So how do you get a toddler to drink then?

Choose Homemade Baby Food!

Posted on 22 September 2011

by Mommy Lyna

My baby Danny turns 6 months in September, so it’s the right time to introduce him to solid food.  Nowadays, back- to-basic lifestyle becomes so popular that making homemade baby food is a choice for modern parents. Homemade baby food is our choice too!  I homemade food for my babies since then and it is more satisfying than buying it from stores and feeding them from cans.

Almira’s First Step

Posted on 14 September 2011

My daughter, Almira has finally started walking last month at 13 months! To me, it was quite a long wait since family and friends kept saying that baby girl usually takes their first step early. So there I was expecting my daughter to start walking before she turns 1. Well, I thought at least she will start walking earlier than her brother, Husayn but in the end she started walking at the age when her brother took his first step too!

Paying Attention to Your Children

Posted on 07 September 2011

by Mamapumpkin‏

It is no doubt that raising children WELL forms one of the most difficult tasks one ever has to achieve but do children ever ask to be born? When you decide to have children, you are taking on the huge responsibility to care for them, and that includes ensuring that they are fed, clean, clothed, sheltered and are healthy and well. More importantly, you have to ensure they grow happily, steadily and safely. This means you fulfil their emotional needs and provide lots of affection, attention and supervision. This means you make sure that they are not harmed by anyone, yourself included. As a parent, you take care of your child’s healthy development by not putting him down, blaming him or excessively screaming/shouting at him or shaming him. This means you spend quality time with him.

The Truth About Scolding Your Kids

Posted on 20 July 2011

Back when I was a growing up kid, I always hated listening to my mom giving me her series of ‘lectures’. Cleansing Fahry’s Prosthesis

Posted on 06 July 2011

by Mommy Lyna

Fahry has been using a foot prosthesis since he was 9 months old. It’s quite good but one thing I can’t stand is the smell… since he uses it almost all the time except when he goes to the bathroom and to bed.  So you can guess how much perspiration there is in the very confined space between his leg and the prosthesis.

Breast Milk Pumping with Dettol

Posted on 06 July 2011

by Mommy Lyna

As a breastfeeding mother, milk pumping at work is my duty. For milk pumping mothers, hygiene is the main concern. Not only do we have to ensure that the precious milk is always safe for babies’ feed later, we also have to ensure that the residue does not disturb anyone. As you know, breast milk is rich in nutrients that attract bacteria and will smell just like other rotten food. Breast milk as well attracts bacterial growth so it must be kept in a cool environment. In this case, I use a cooler bag with chillers that may last for 10 hours.

Growing Up with Dettol

Posted on 29 June 2011

by Mamapumpkin‏

As a child, whenever the name Dettol was heard, we could smell it. We knew it was that brown liquid that was used to sanitise. That’s what hospitals smelt like and that’s what toilets smelt like. Today, Dettol is very different! It still hints wafts of traditional Dettol but there is a lot more perfume added in today’s Dettol. After all, we use Dettol today in almost everything; body soap, liquid soap, wet wipes, hand sanitisers, you name it. Soon they will have Dettol moisturisers!

Intan Gives The Thumbs Up For Dettol Products

Posted on 23 June 2011

Having two kids at home means staying hygienic is super important since kids are more easily exposed to germs. My son, Husayn loves playing outside the house and sometimes to my utter horror, he will simply roll his body all over the place without caring whether the surface is clean or not. As for my 11-month old baby Almira, she is really into crawling all around the house and it got me worried because I’m sure even though it is indoors, the floor surface is not 100% clean.

So I have to make sure he’s not falling or stumbling on anything. And the baby still needs my full attention especially when his brothers are around!

It is only a matter of juggling 2 balls or 3 or 4 or quantity X, but how many can juggle with the accompanying cool stunts? How many employed working Moms juggle work and family WITHOUT a babysitter, maid nor Nanny, nor any help at all from anyone? How many Moms are employed and have a real BOSS at work to answer to yet still care for kids FULL TIME? It is literally having TWO jobs with TWO bosses, and a lot of demands.

Training Baby To Drink Milk From The Bottle

Posted on 30 March 2011

Someone asked me how did I train my baby to drink milk from the bottle.

Back when my eldest was a baby, I did try to feed him my own breast milk from the bottle around 2 weeks before I was due to start going to the office. Guess what he did? He cried loudly and refused the bottle. The same thing happened with my daughter. Latch her on to my breast, no doubt she will suckle happily – but try making her drink from the bottle she will refuse indefinitely!

Occupying Kids Productively over the School Holidays 2011

Oh my goodness, where did time go? Thankfully, the first school holiday for the year eases us in with only 5 days of which to entertain our kids before they drive us absolutely bonkers. Planning them doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be dogmatic about it and follow your plan to the T but at least, it gives you something to work towards and doesn’t idle time away. I’m one for productivity so we even plan to REST!!!

Preparing an optimum homework environment for your child

Posted on 09 March 2011

by Mamapumpkin‏

As Asian parents, majority of us in KL are guilty of being comparable to our Singaporean counterparts – super kiasu! If you picked a thousand Moms from a KL basket, I guarantee 95% of them run the children’s rat race. They want their children to first be able to know their colours and shapes, then their alphabets and numbers, then learn how to read, then score straight A’s for their exams or get a top level position in class, and eventually complete their SPM, go to college and earn a brilliant University degree. We all want the best for our kids after all, but at what expense? Play time and exercise, learning the emotional graces, being confident and self-assured are skills all just as important to succeed in this world and it is no wonder why many straight A Malaysian students at school are now just mediocre adults in society. Sure, they may make it to become doctors or professionals and earn a decent living but when put on the international standards list, they appear at the bottom half.

Season Greetings from Amber Chia

Posted on 29 December 2010

by Amber Chia

I’m in Sandakan, Sabah right now, I’m not in KL, and this will be the first time I will be away from my son for so long, 2-3 days, and I miss him a lot now. Now I can feel, you know, how a mother misses her son when she is away. I did call back just now, and my mom said my son is already sleeping, about 9 something, so I couldn’t talk to him.

So you want to hear him cry and all that ?
No. I remember that when I was in Penang, my husband call my son to talk to me, even if I don’t know what he is talking about but when I turn on my speaker phone, my husband told me that he was looking around and looking for me when he hears my voice. So, unfortunately today I have a packed schedule, so when I called my parents, he has already gone to sleep. So, I miss him a lot and I’m sure he’s going to miss me as well.

Lying to your kids – Should you? Shouldn’t you? Where do you draw the line?

Posted on 16 December 2010

by Mamapumpkin‏

Is Santa Claus real? What about the tooth fairy? Do our toys really come alive when we sleep?
Will I really go blind if I read in bed? These are all questions my 6 year old has asked me and I have lied about them all.

*GUILTY AS CHARGED*

For starters, I had 10 wonderful years believing in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy so why shouldn’t my kids? It was such a magical experience for me knowing that besides my own parents and family, there were people out there looking out for me - elves who could listen, fairies who were watching, and Santa, who obviously loved me in some form or other and could get me toys my parents wouldn’t!

Stimulating My Disable Kid’s Physical Ability

Posted on 09 December 2010

by Mommy Lyna

I love to bring my kids to places they could play, learn and enhance their skills. Especially Fahry because we want him to utilize his remaining body parts. His right leg muscles show some delays compared to his left ones. It could be because he likes to use his left ones more.

So we brought him to swim and enroll in swimming class (organized by his nursery). Fahry is a good swimmer smile Not that he knows how to swim, but he’s a brave one, when we put him in water, he didn’t fret at all, instead enjoy each second of being in the pool.

It stopped as I started to play Quran recitation in our room all the way from night to dawn.

So during the session Fahry looked so energetic and happy. He played in freedom even if without instruction from the Physiotherapist.

Disciplining Your Child – to cane or not to cane?

Posted on 04 November 2010

by Mamapumpkin‏

An aged old topic that has been discussed over and over in Malaysia and here I am, discussing it yet again. Why? Because I still hear of so many parents hitting their children, that’s why.

Did anyone ever say parenting was easy? No, I didn’t think so, and hitting a child (who is completely helpless) is a form of abuse. And by hitting, I also mean spanking, whacking, slapping, flicking, caning, yelling, degrading, embarrassing, threatening, shouting, screaming and basically any form of aggression and violence that is carried out that instils fear in a child.

Dilemma of a Working Mother

Posted on 31 October 2010

by Intan

I used to envy those lucky stay at home mothers. They got to spend their time at home 24/7 with the kids, watch them grow up and best of all they don’t have to worry finding maid or babysitter to take care of their kids.

The horror stories of maid abusing children, babies not being properly taken care of at day care, and there were also stories of babysitters neglecting the kids scared the heck out of me. I’m not exactly comfortable having a maid since living with a foreigner who is also a stranger does not seem too appealing to me.  I guess if I were to choose between having a maid, sending to day care or babysitter, I will choose sending to daycare – provided that the day care is legal of course and approved by the Social Welfare Department.

Having A Disable Child, What’s Next?

Posted on 27 October 2010

by Mommy Lyna

Many parents when they knew that they were given disabled children would spend some time blaming themselves, it is OK, if this happen to you, this is normal. But dragging yourself into this for more than a little second is a disaster.

Don’t worry if you have a disabled baby, regardless of whether he or she is physically disabled, or mentally disabled. What you have to do is enjoy the moment.

It was a hectic evening when I gave birth to my second lovely progeny. I was 26 weeks into my pregnancy when I bled, and it did not stop even after 2 weeks, until his birth day. My child was born at 28 weeks, premature, too soon.

It wasn’t only that, more shocking news came later when the nurse told me that my baby was abnormal. He was different than his brother, who was born as a 3.3kg healthy baby with a loud cry. My second boy cried a little, shrieking, and so soft. He was very small, only 1.19kg at birth, and has no right foot…

Sight and smells of food would cause me heart palpitations and my pupils would dilate. Even at five! Naturally, my first daughter took after me seeing that we used to fight over Tim Tams since she was 2 years old but nothing prepared me for my 2nd daughter, who was just not into food. What happened? She can NOT be my daughter if she does not love food! And just for the record, her father is also a food lover like her mama, so what happened?

At some point in your parenting life, you will meet this hurdle that you’d need to cross and if you haven’t reached it yet, you may want to save this for future reference. I just gave birth to my second child recently. I named her Almira which means “princess” in Arabic and husband and I were so excited because our first one, Husayn is a boy - so having a daughter is perfect to complete our little family.

Breastfeeding sure is one of the biggest decisions all new mothers make when having a baby and are then forced to re-evaluate when the going gets tough. Are you cut out to be a breastfeeding Mom? I thought I was but little did I know how difficult it was. I soon had to decide between the best nourishment for baby versus my own sanity.
