Breast Milk Pumping with Dettol

by Mommy Lyna
Posted on 06 July 2011

As a breastfeeding mother, milk pumping at work is my duty. For milk pumping mothers, hygiene is the main concern. Not only do we have to ensure that the precious milk is always safe for babies’ feed later, we also have to ensure that the residue does not disturb anyone. As you know, breast milk is rich in nutrients that attract bacteria and will smell just like other rotten food. Breast milk as well attracts bacterial growth so it must be kept in a cool environment. In this case, I use a cooler bag with chillers that may last for 10 hours.

I just want to share with you how I pump milk at work and make sure everything is Okay for me, my baby and everyone.

Usually, before I start pumping, I wash my hands with Dettol anti-bacterial hand soap. It is the same as washing our hands before meals. We are encouraged to wash our hands as breast milk is for our baby’s meal.

My favourite antibacterial soap

I have used Dettol ever since. I really like the scent and it is also soft on my hands.

I bring my own hand soap to the office (LOL) just because I like it so much, especially its scent.

If I am not able to wash my hands especially when I am travelling outstation, I use Dettol hand sanitizer.

Rubbing hands with Dettol hand sanitizer. It should be with both hands, but I have to hold the camera!

Remember during the H1N1 scare, everyone was using this sanitizer. Hand sanitizer was made available everywhere. But it should be practiced right every now and then. This small hand sanitizer has been in my handbag since forever.

I also use the Dettol cleansing wipes. Other than using it to dampen my face, I also use it for breast milk pumping. I use it to wipe any drop or sprinkle off the pump to prevent any unpleasant smell later on.

Dettol Cleansing Wipes work wonders! I really like the scent and the texture of the disposable wipe cloth which is very soft and so flexible. It comes in a cute packet that is very easy to carry around. Even these wipes is also a must in my diaper bag.

Easy to pull off

Can you see the milk drop running on the side of the bottle?

Tadaaaa.. Just wipe it off!

For mothers who are concerned about hygiene in milk pumping at work, you should not worry as long as you practice good sanitation care for everything. It is vital especially when it involves kids. So I make sure I bring Dettol hand sanitizer and Dettol cleansing wipes everytime I go out with my kids to keep them germs-free especially after they touch public objects.

I also use Dettol products at home. It is a must for keeping our house free from germs and bacteria!

How about you? Do you practice what I do?
