Choose Homemade Baby Food!

by Mommy Lyna
Posted on 22 September 2011

My baby Danny turns 6 months in September, so it’s the right time to introduce him to solid food.  Nowadays, back- to-basic lifestyle becomes so popular that making homemade baby food is a choice for modern parents. Homemade baby food is our choice too!  I homemade food for my babies since then and it is more satisfying than buying it from stores and feeding them from cans.

For my two older kids, I started with pressed white rice mixed with expressed breast milk. Just slightly thicker than breast milk, it is just to get them familiar with the new texture. It’s also to make sure they know how to swallow different textures.  For Danny, he had pumpkin puree for his first intro-to-solids-programme.

Puree to me is the simplest way to feed a young baby. Not only is the process simple, it can also be stored not for days but for 3-6 months! However, choose to store it for the shortest time possible to retain the nutrient. I don’t think there’s any need to store baby food for more than 2 or 3 days unlike breast milk.  As long as there is no crisis, we can always get the food supply.

To make baby puree, we just need simply the particular fruits or vegetables, either a combination of two or more types, or only one type of fruit or vegetable. We can either cook it first by boiling, steaming, microwaving or baking; or we can give it raw to the baby. For super-busy mummies, giving raw fruit or vegetable is the best choice so that we can save time on the dish-washing.

I love avocado a lot because it does not require cooking.

For young babies who just turn 6 months (or some mothers may choose to start solid food at 4 months), baby puree suits them very well. It has a soft texture, is watery and easy to swallow yet is high in fibres, vitamins and other nutrients. Mothers should try a 4-days rule to test for allergies and consider giving one type of fruit or vegetable at a time.

After a month or two when the babies look okay and happy with their new food, it will be time to change the texture to thicker ones like porridge, with soft meat like fish or crab. However, fresh, soft fruits like papaya, banana can be given to them as finger food for chewing.

There is a great feeling of satisfaction from feeding our babies with homemade baby food rather than instant baby food (unless there is a need).  At least we prepared it with love and there is no additive!
