Days of a Schooling Mom, a Mom with school going kid(s)
by MamapumpkinPosted on 25 January 2011
When I moaned about my babies taking up all my time, they said don’t worry, soon enough they will be off to school and you can finally get your life back. Before my second child came along, T1 was a school going kid and although I treasured the time when she was at school, it didn’t make me less busy. And now that she’s in Standard One and I have T2, I am busier than ever!
If anyone tells you that you will get your life back once your kids get in and out of preschool, they are lying. The older the kids get, the busier YOU get.
For one, they have school work and with school work, they inevitably need guidance. Unless you hire them a tuition teacher or have someone else do this mentoring task, real time is spent helping them with their homework. Even if they are able to do their homework independently, there will be moments when they do seek assistance and you will need to pack their school bags the night before or check their homework or sign off on their school work or ensure their pencils and colour pencils are all sharpened (What? My 6 year old can’t sharpen pencils? Leave her to it and I could get a 2 inch pencil within an hour with shavings used as pretend food embedded within her pencil case). All this takes time. TIME!!! What about nagging them to shower and eat and whatever else that needs to be done. Kids at 6 don’t automatically know how to do these things. Heck, I know parents whose kids are 16 and STILL don’t know how to do these things independently! So what more a 6 year old?
And let’s not even go to the subject of after school activities. Some parents send their kids to math enrichment programmes, extra classes for Mandarin, tuition of all sorts, music lessons, sports…….the list can really get quite exhaustive. With these extra-curriculur activities come extra extra-curriculur homework. Extra time for music practice. How do they all do it? I have no idea. I just know I can’t.
And with the bane of school and all the work that evolves around ONE kid (I won’t even ask what happens to those with 2, 3, 4, 5???!!!!!! In my Mom’s days, they had 5, 6, 7, 8, 11!!! *FAINT* They probably all just get kicked into one big barrel and get told to sort it out themselves! No wonder their generation are more independent!), what about time for their doctors visits and grocery shopping and some outdoor play time and Mommy’s me time, Mommy’s time with friends, Mommy and Daddy time??? We only have 168 hours in a week and still need to sleep, eat and clean ourselves. So many things just get the big slash.
And to make matters worse, I still have a 1 year old to start this Mommy run all over again. WHOOPEE!!! Well, as my daughter always asks me, “Why did you have kids, Mom?” and then she ends with, “Well, it’s too late. You’ll just have to take care of us forever now!” And you know what? She is right. For as long as they are our children we will always be there as their parents, worrying about their well-being till our dying day. And I wouldn’t change that for anything.
