Dilemma of a Working Mother

by Intan
Posted on 31 October 2010

I used to envy those lucky stay at home mothers. They got to spend their time at home 24/7 with the kids, watch them grow up and best of all they don’t have to worry finding maid or babysitter to take care of their kids.

The horror stories of maid abusing children, babies not being properly taken care of at day care, and there were also stories of babysitters neglecting the kids scared the heck out of me. I’m not exactly comfortable having a maid since living with a foreigner who is also a stranger does not seem too appealing to me.  I guess if I were to choose between having a maid, sending to day care or babysitter, I will choose sending to daycare – provided that the day care is legal of course and approved by the Social Welfare Department.

I don’t send my kids to the day care though, since I have a babysitter, who is also my auntie and her house is not that far from mine. Well, I guess I’m kind of lucky because my babysitter is also a relative of mine and I’ve known her since I was a kid and best of all she has been a babysitter since 1986!

My auntie aka the babysitter with a swollen-lips Husayn back in 2009

My eldest, Husayn used to fall sick a lot when he was a baby. I admit that I used to wish that if he ever was to fall sick, I hope that it’s during weekdays because when I send him to my auntie’s he seems to get better. I remember once when Husayn was crying endlessly as his fever got too hot and I failed miserably to insert the medicine into his rectum, I myself ended up crying. My auntie aka my babysitter is usually the one who clip my kids’ nails when they got too long, prepare traditional remedy for my kids when they fall sick and she’s currently training my baby, Almira to turn her body and lie on her tummy.

I think one of the best solution for working mother is having a day care near the office. My office for example has its own day care and this really helps because mothers can always come and drop by to see their kids and if you have a baby who is currently breastfeeding, you can even breastfeed your baby during lunch time.

I guess whatever choice you make, your family is the most important thing ever. At the end of the day I guess I should be grateful because I am blessed with two gorgeous kids and I love my job,  and I also just realised that I have the best baby sitter!
