Growing Up with Dettol

by Mamapumpkin‏
Posted on 29 June 2011

As a child, whenever the name Dettol was heard, we could smell it. We knew it was that brown liquid that was used to sanitise. That’s what hospitals smelt like and that’s what toilets smelt like. Today, Dettol is very different! It still hints wafts of traditional Dettol but there is a lot more perfume added in today’s Dettol. After all, we use Dettol today in almost everything; body soap, liquid soap, wet wipes, hand sanitisers, you name it. Soon they will have Dettol moisturisers!

There! Remember this? Can you smell it??? I remember my Mom always using this in her pail when mopping the floors. I myself used it when we were doing 15 cloth nappies per day for T1. The poor Hubs, he hand-washed every single nappy!!! We went through this rigorous 5 step laundry cycle for these baby nappies. Of course, when T2 came along, the nappies didn’t last long…….

See? This is what an old bottle of Dettol looks like. See how far they’ve come? It all used to be in glass bottles before.

And here! We have all the Dettol products that we use at home! I love the Dettol wet wipes because it gives me a sanitised public toilet seat. After wiping with Dettol wipes, we’d still line the toilet seat with loads of tissues or those airplane toilet seat liners. Urgh, don’t you just hate public toilets?

The Dettol hand sanitisers are good when you need clean hands and are not within water distance to wash your hands. Of course, washing your hands is always the BEST way to clean you hands but you don’t exactly have a tap everywhere you go, do you? I insist on my kids using hand sanitisers whenever we’re out before meals and after play. For example, if they played at a kid’s gym or visited the Doctor’s clinic, the first thing they’d have to do when they leave the premise is to sanitise their little fingers.

I’m not such a big fan of Dettol liquid soaps but I do like the Dettol soap bars. I feel that dettol liquid soap may strip my skin out of its natural bacteria. I don’t know. It’s probably psychological and I’m a psycho.

These days, we use the Dettol antiseptic for cuts and anything that needs it really.

What about you? Do you use Dettol in your family?
