Taking Small Kids For A Short Vacation
by Mommy LynaPosted on 10 August 2011
I talked to my friend about bringing kids on a family vacation. She said it is quite impossible to take the whole family for a vacation while kids are still small. It won’t be a vacation, but chaos.
Last month, we took the kids to Penang. We experienced London with two of them (plus the chaotic plane cancellation due to the volcanic eruption in Iceland last year). It was not bad. To me, it is not a problem to take them out of town provided we are ready to face all the consequences.
We rented an MPV instead of taking our sedan car so that the kids would get extra space along the journey. Travelling in a sedan car with my active kids is so exhausting, at least to me, even though it is for home-to-office. So we got the MPV to get some peace of mind.

We stayed in a service apartment with bedrooms and a living hall. It is more convenient for our kids as there is extra space to play and hide.
Some quick tips for taking small kids on a short vacation:
- Plan ahead. Don’t get messed up with itsy-bitsy things later. Plan your journey especially the route and where to stay.
- Limit physical activities such as going to beaches; you might have trouble controlling the kids. Vote for sightseeing.
- If you have any family members who love to go on holiday with you, you can take them. At least they can help to look after the kids.
- Bring your kids’ favourite things. You might need to soothe them later.
- Don’t expect too much from your kids. Get ready for tantrums.
However, if you are not ready, don’t push yourself just for the sake of going on a ‘vacation’. But it is rewarding, at least for that particular weekend as we shall be free from daily routines. And it is even more rewarding when we spend time with our family without intervention from other problems.
So, what are you waiting for? Let’s have some plans for this weekend…
