The Truth About Scolding Your Kids
by IntanPosted on 20 July 2011
Back when I was a growing up kid, I always hated listening to my mom giving me her series of ‘lectures’. The scolding was horrible since I even ended up refusing to help her in the kitchen just because she will start telling me off again when something goes wrong. Don’t get me wrong, I love my mother unconditionally, but sometimes her scolding drives me up the wall!
I remember vowing to myself that if I have a kid someday I will never ever resort to lecturing my kids. So with 2 kids in tow now, do I manage to refrain myself from scolding?
Of course not! Hey, it runs in the genes after all. I thought it’s kind of funny though because halfway through my scolding, I will suddenly realize that my son’s behavior is a lot like me which means he hates hearing my verbal diarrhea – so I end my scolding there and then.
The thing with my 4 year old son is he definitely cannot sit still. I think the only time he can sit still is when he’s sleeping! Being obsessed with Ultraman is no help either since he will usually force the adults in the house to help him find Ultraman’s videos on YouTube. He will then follow every single move that Ultraman made to my amusement.
I have started sending Husayn to playschool since May and even in school, he’s like this little bundle of energy that won’t stop even if I scream ‘STOP!’ at the top of my lungs.
So now I’m trying to take another approach to my kids. Instead of scolding for a full 5 minutes when my son pinches his little sister, I try to keep it short and simple. Honestly, I don’t like raising my voice because it is quite tiresome and my kids usually don’t listen anyway. So I try a different strategy where I reprimand either my son or daughter at a moderate but firm tone. Honestly, I found that my son listens more compared to when I shout at him so I think the strategy does work.
Come to think of it, I don’t even know why I waste my time scolding my kids before. After all they are just 4 years old and 1 year old kids who sometimes don’t even understand what on earth I am scolding them for!
