Training Baby To Drink Milk From The Bottle

by Intan
Posted on 30 March 2011

Someone asked me how did I train my baby to drink milk from the bottle.

Back when my eldest was a baby, I did try to feed him my own breast milk from the bottle around 2 weeks before I was due to start going to the office. Guess what he did? He cried loudly and refused the bottle. The same thing happened with my daughter. Latch her on to my breast, no doubt she will suckle happily – but try making her drink from the bottle she will refuse indefinitely!

I was quite worried initially, but once I started work and started sending the kids to the babysitter, everything turned out alright. I’m not sure whether it’s the fact that it’s not the mother (which is me of course) who is trying to bottle feed the kids contribute to this factor but honestly on my own, I have never successfully train my kids to drink milk from the bottle.

I’ve done a little bit of research though to find some tips in helping any of you who’s facing the same challenges in training your baby to feed from the bottle. Here goes:

  1. Wait until the baby is hungry
Baby refuses milk from the bottle? Let them refuse and see how long they can take it. Sure in the end they will get hungry and cry, right? Once they are hungry, surely the will devour the milk from the bottle!

  2. Let other people feed the baby
This is exactly like my case. Don’t underestimate those tiny little babies, of course they can differentiate whether it’s their mother feeding them from the bottle or the babysitter! If not how come my babysitter doesn’t have any problem in feeding my baby when I’m away for work? Hope this will work for you too!

  3. Create a familiar situation
Create a familiar situation to resemble breastfeeding. Maybe you can warm up the bottle nipple, make sure the milk is also warm or surround the baby with something that smells like mommy, maybe mommy’s clothes. Another way to do it is by placing the baby just like the breastfeeding position.

Hopefully that will help! If all else fail don’t lose hope and keep trying!
