Dettol Tips: Hygiene On Holiday
School holidays are here! It’s time to get the kids out of their uniform and into their holiday gear!
Going on holiday is one of the highlights of most people’s calendar so it’s important to take steps to make sure that nothing ruins that well earned break. Unfortunately, with a different environment come new health and hygiene risks. So it is worth taking some time to think about the potential risks and how you might protect yourself against them, where possible.
Top Tips for a Healthy Holiday
- Make sure you have appropriate medicine with you before you leave home. This should include a diarrhea treatment and rehydration salts. Diarrhea can make you feel much worse if you become dehydrated as a result.
- It’s a good idea to carry antibacterial wipes and hand sanitizer for use on the plane when you cannot reach the bathroom before eating or drinking. Aeroplanes, trains and buses, especially those that are air-conditioned, can be a haven for germs, which can remain live on surfaces for days.
- Think about surfaces you are touching that may be contaminated, such as doors, handles and switches on public transport or in hotels; these surfaces may all carry germs. Take particular care to clean your hands with soap and clean water, or with a hand sanitizer, before and after meals or when handling food and after using the toilet.
- If you wash your hands, use a clean dry towel or hot air to dry your hands properly after washing. The duration of washing hands is also important, 20 seconds being the optimum time. According to the Dettol Global Hygiene Survey 2009 findings only 15% of Malaysians recognised this.
