Predicting The Sex Of Your Baby

by Gerhard van Niekerk

Couples that are already pregnant sometimes want to be surprised by whether they have a boy or a girl, while others want to know before the baby is born. There are a number of ways that couples can try to predict the gender of their child, ranging from the scientific to the silly. There are even some ways that couples can use to attempt to predict the gender of their child before conception even takes place.

By far, the best way to tell what gender a fetus is by ultrasound. An ultrasound is a diagnostic image that uses sound waves to bounce off of structures in the body, creating a picture based on the objects that they’re bouncing off of. This method is non-invasive, and can also be used to tell whether a fetus is developing normally or not. Ultrasounds are a standard part of a regular Obstetric-Gynecological exam for a pregnant woman.

Another way people use to determine what sex a baby is going to be is by looking at how the mother is carrying it. Some maintain that girls sit higher in the uterus, creating a rounder appearance to the abdomen, while boys sit lower. Others claim the opposite. Usually, the way a woman is carrying her child has more to do with her particular body and the way her fetus is lying than anything else.

Back in the day, women used to use simple pendulums made of buttons to determine the sex of their children. They would tie a string to a good-sized button, and hold the string over the mother’s navel with the button down. Eventually, the button would start to move. The gender of the baby would be interpreted based on the button’s motion, like whether it was moving in a straight line or a circle, horizontally or vertically, or clockwise or counter-clockwise. It’s assumed that the subtle, involuntary motions of the string-holder’s hand had more to do with the button moving than the child’s gender did, and this method of predicting a baby’s sex is little more than guessing.

When it comes to predicting a baby’s gender before its conceived, parents can try to take an active role in deciding which type of sperm gets to fertilize a woman’s egg. X-chromosome carrying sperm are said to be heavier, slower, and tougher than Y-chromosome carrying sperm, which some couples choose to use to their advantage. By picking specific sexual positions and times during a woman’s ovulation period, couples can try to ensure that conditions inside of a woman’s vagina will weed out the sperm that they don’t want. As a result, they can boost the likelihood that they will conceive the gender that they want.

Mankind has been trying to predict the gender of unborn babies ever since there have been unborn babies. Some cultures prized male infants while others preferred females, but almost nobody has been able to resist the temptation of trying to figure out what sex a baby is going to be. With diagnostic imaging techniques like ultrasound, and conception techniques that favor one type of sperm over another, couples can easily predict the gender of their unborn baby.
